'The Room of Unlimited Possibilities' at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival
Theatro Transcendental, a pioneering theatrical venture inspired by philosophical, psychological and spiritual theories, will be offering its first dramatic experiment, ‘The Room of Unlimited Possibilities’ to Edinburgh Fringe audiences, after a sold-out run in Cyprus, where the show was born and raised. The production will be played daily at 6.55pm at ‘theSpaces on North Bridge (venue 36) Theatre 2', from the 5th-20th August (excl. Sundays).
“I came to see theatre and I saw a perfect description of the mind being staged”, was one of the countless energetic responses received through emails and website messages after the production premiered, validating the existence of this risky endeavour. “This is not theatre, this is healing on stage”, reads another – and this one is spot on. The company has selected the theatrical stage as their means of conveying, but also obtaining information about the human mind, soul and behaviour. All of this is part of an effort to use art to contribute to the evolution of human consciousness, and, ultimately, to heal. “It is our duty to better ourselves every day,” explains Korina Kontaxaki, who initiated the company. “And it is the duty of all artists to construct work which enables us to become better, not to become more afraid, more restless, more nervous, more lost; effects which much of today’s entertainment industry thrives on.” Essentially, the company does not aim to break any stage rules, but instead, through abiding them it aims to revive the ancient theatrical aims on which the foundations of artistic healing and catharsis firmly rest.
‘The Room of Unlimited Possibilities’ traces the journey of a woman who has reached a state of desperation in her life, not through the occurrence of any great tragedy, but simply through the mundane essence of the her existence. She struggles to communicate with her soul, who speaks only in sounds played live onstage. Between them, like an invisible wall, are the memories that wound them. Trapped by the eyes of the audience watching her, the woman begins to unravel her own intricate layers, and, in doing so, the mist around the soul's messages begins to clear. The woman then stumbles into a room… a room filled with unexpected truths, offered to her with one prerequisite: absolute surrender. But surrender to what? Who? Where? No one can say. Until the audience watching her offers her the solution.
